PS5 Pro UK buying guide: console, disc drive and bundle costs explained

Work out the real cost of a PS5 Pro setup, decide whether you need the disc drive, and check whether a UK bundle saves money on things you actually want.

A PS5 Pro price is only useful once you know what has to go beside the console. Someone who downloads every game can leave the disc drive out. Someone with a shelf of PS4 and PS5 discs needs to include it in the budget from the start.

At Sony's current UK reference prices, that means £789.99 for the console or £859.98 with the separate disc drive. A vertical stand takes those hardware totals to £814.98 and £884.97 respectively. These are calculated baskets, not retailer bundle offers or claims about the cheapest available deal.

The useful question is not simply whether the Pro is the most expensive PS5. It is whether its particular improvements justify the complete setup cost for the games, screen and library you already have.

PS5 Pro costs at a glance

The console price comes from Sony's UK price announcement and its UK console listings. The disc drive and vertical stand are listed separately at £69.99 and £24.99. Checked 25 September 2026; discounts, delivery charges and availability can change.

Both baskets assume you already have a suitable display and use the included controller. They exclude additional games, subscriptions, extra accessories and any delivery charges. Add those to the actual checkout total where they apply.

Do not use the old £699.99 launch price as today's default. Sony's revised UK recommended price took effect on 2 April 2026. An older review can still explain the hardware, but its value judgement may be based on a different price.

What is already in the PS5 Pro box?

Sony lists the console with a 2TB SSD, one DualSense wireless controller, HDMI cable, power cord and two horizontal feet. ASTRO's PLAYROOM is pre-installed. Neither the disc drive nor the vertical stand is part of the standard console package. See Sony's box contents.

That makes a practical difference when shopping. A solo player does not need to buy another controller merely because a retailer recommends one. A charging station is a convenience, not part of the minimum console basket. And a console photograph showing upright placement should not be treated as proof that the vertical stand is included.

The 2TB figure describes installed storage, not a promise of 2TB entirely free for your games: Sony reserves a portion for system software and other functions. Nevertheless, decide whether you actually need more storage before adding an expansion drive to an already expensive order.

Basket one: you buy digital games

For an all-digital library, the console alone is the starting point. Use the supplied feet for horizontal placement, or add the stand when you need an upright setup. Sony's setup instructions explain both arrangements.

Do not add the disc drive solely because a bundle makes it look discounted. A £69.99 accessory you will not use is not a saving. Equally, choosing the console without it is not an irreversible decision: Sony supports adding the compatible drive later.

Before paying, consider your next few purchases. Would you genuinely prefer discs for any of them? Are you about to receive a physical game as a gift? Do you want to use compatible Blu-ray films? Those are concrete reasons to reconsider the drive; a vague desire to buy every available accessory is not.

For this buyer, the comparison worth making is between the complete Pro basket and the standard PS5 Digital Edition—not between the Pro and a bundle padded with accessories you never intended to purchase.

Basket two: you already own games on disc

A PS5 Pro arrives without a disc drive. For compatible physical PS5 and PS4 games, add Sony's Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1, rather than assuming that any USB optical drive or any component described as a PS5 drive will do. Sony specifically lists PS5 Pro compatibility on its accessory page.

There is also a setup requirement that matters for gifts and offline households: an internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console when setting it up. Plan that connection before the day you expect to play. Follow the official installation instructions, rather than treating it as an ordinary plug-in USB accessory.

Disc ownership does not eliminate installation or storage requirements. Sony explains that disc games install on the console and the disc must remain inserted when playing. Moving a game installation is not the same thing as converting its disc licence into a digital purchase.

For someone who wants to keep using a physical library, £859.98 is therefore the relevant Pro hardware reference, before an optional vertical stand. Compare that number with a standard disc-equipped PS5, and make sure both the console and drive can arrive when you need them. The cheaper half of a two-item setup is little comfort if the other half is unavailable.

The January 2028 change matters

Sony announced in July 2026 that disc production for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end from January 2028. Sony says games released on disc before that date are not affected by this transition.

That is not the same as your existing discs suddenly becoming unusable. It does, however, change the reason for buying a drive. Assess it against the physical games you own or actually plan to buy, and compatible film discs—not an assumption that every future release will have a disc edition indefinitely.

For an established physical collection, the drive may still be useful. For a new buyer with no discs and no particular physical purchases in mind, it is easier to justify leaving it out.

Is a PS5 Pro bundle genuinely better value?

Judge the delivered cost of the items you want, not the advertised saving against a collection of recommended prices.

Start with the same console, condition and warranty, then list each extra. Check the exact game edition and whether it is a disc or a download code. Confirm the controller model, whether a disc drive is genuinely included, and whether all items are available for your postcode. A picture is not an itemised contents list.

Here is an illustrative example using the reference hardware prices above. It is not a live retailer offer. Assume a game you actually want is independently available to you for £40, with no extra delivery cost, and a bundle containing the Pro, disc drive and that same game costs £879.99 delivered.

For someone who wants all three items, that is a £19.99 saving. For someone who does not want the game, the same bundle costs £20.01 more than the £859.98 console-and-drive basket. It has changed from a saving into an extra purchase.

Discounts elsewhere also change the answer. Replace every reference figure with the best usable offer you have actually found. Do not count a delivery charge twice, but do not omit it because the bundle price looks attractive. Treat membership discounts, trade-ins and finance offers separately unless you qualify and understand the full cost.

A useful rule is: give an unwanted extra £0 of value in your buying calculation. Any possible resale proceeds are uncertain until you have sold it.

Should you buy a standard PS5 instead?

Sony's current UK recommended prices put the standard PS5 with disc drive at £569.99 and PS5 Digital Edition at £519.99. Its current listings identify 1TB and 825GB versions respectively. Retailers may still carry different hardware revisions or bundles, so check the precise item. Sources: Sony's prices and current UK models.

At those prices, the Pro costs £270 more than the Digital Edition. Add its separate drive and the gap against a standard disc-equipped PS5 is £289.99. These are not identical-storage comparisons: the Pro includes 2TB. But more storage should be part of your decision, not a reason to ignore the overall gap.

There is another useful check for physical-game buyers. A £519.99 Digital Edition plus a £69.99 drive totals £589.98—£19.99 above the standard £569.99 disc model, before considering the different listed storage. Buying the apparently cheaper console and adding the drive is not automatically the cheaper route.

Sony describes Pro improvements including PSSR image upscaling, more advanced ray tracing and higher or more consistent frame rates in supported games. Crucially, the enhancements vary by game. The official Pro page explains the features and links to supported titles; it does not establish that every game runs at 4K and 120 frames per second.

Before paying the premium, name two or three games you will actually play and check their Pro modes. Then consider your display. A feature advertised for a compatible 4K or high-refresh-rate screen is not a reason to budget as though every television will show it in the same way.

For a first-time buyer primarily wanting access to PS5 games, a standard model deserves serious consideration. For someone whose favourite games have worthwhile Pro enhancements and whose screen suits them, the premium may be easier to justify. That is a more useful distinction than calling the most expensive model the best choice for everyone.

Already own a PS5? Start with the upgrade cost

Keeping a working console costs £0 in new hardware. Upgrading should solve a specific problem or deliver an improvement you genuinely value.

Work out your net spend as: new Pro setup + necessary extras − realistic proceeds from your existing console. Allow for selling fees or delivery where applicable, and check whether a trade-in quotation includes accessories you would otherwise have kept. Do not subtract an optimistic asking price as though it were guaranteed cash.

If your complaint is limited storage, compare a suitable storage expansion before replacing the entire machine. If it is visual quality in a particular game, investigate that game's Pro support rather than relying on console-wide marketing. And if you remain happy with your current setup, there is no obligation to upgrade simply because a newer version exists.

Which PS5 setup makes sense for you?

These are reference hardware costs, not live offers. Before ordering, check the exact console and condition, the bundle contents, the delivery total and whether the setup fits the games you want to play. Buy the useful basket, not the biggest advertised discount.
